Watch video – black cockatoos return to Torbay in large numbers – Carnaby’s

Over the last week there have been several reports of a largish flock of black cockatoos in the Torbay area.  They have been confirmed as Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos. The attached video was taken this morning, 27 March 2018, in Torbay by Keith Smith.  172 cockatoos were counted in this video.

We do see all three types of black cockatoos in Torbay and larger flocks generally start appearing as winter approaches.

It has been very sad to note that Baudin’s have been in noticeably lower in numbers in recent years. This is what the WA Museum website has to say about them  “In the last 10 years (since 2016), there has been a dramatic decline in numbers recorded at traditional roosts sites.”  A very worrying trend.

All cockatoo sightings are appreciated.  When reporting sightings please include as much information as possible.  Things to include:

  • species if known, otherwise red or white tailed;
  • number or estimated number seen;
  • location – preferably GPS reading, however street address will do;
  • behaviour – feeding, roosting, flying direction; and
  • number of juveniles if known.
