This event will run twice, on consecutive Sundays (18th & 25th November). The section of Bibbulmun Track chosen is from Shelley Beach Lookout to Cosy Corner, an 8.5 km section of outstanding beauty and floral diversity.  This 3 hour hike will be guided by Rosie from Dirty Feet Tours.  The walk will start in the West Cape Howe National Park at the Shelley Beach Lookout.  There are exceptional views from this point of the sheer cliffs, as well as down to Shelley Beach and as far as the distant Dunsky’s Beach.  This site has a hang gliding platform which is used regularly.

From the lookout there is a short up hill walk to access the Bibbulmun Track.  The track to Cosy Corner heads north and descends  through open forest before reaching upland flat country which has a large grove of paperbarks (Melaleuca rhaphiophylla) that survive through groundwater seepage. Crossing the Shelley Beach Road you continue eastwards for a short distance before the  track takes a turn to the north.  This is perhaps the hardest section of trail that will be encountered.  The track traverses a large smooth granite outcrop for about 75-100m on a moderate incline. Most people have no trouble with this.  Just take your time. After reaching the top you you pass through a thicket of trees and emerge onto a flattish granite rock where there is a stunning view of the ocean and islands in the distance.

The track continues north through a range of vegetation types, from wooded areas to coastal heath, sheoak stands, Banksia quercifolia thickets and areas of Banksia illicifolia.  At one point the track follows the curve of the beautiful Dingo Beach for a few hundred metres with low coastal heath affording stunning views to the beach and bay below before descending into the valley of sheoak and jarrah and then crossing the Dingo Beach Track.  The trail wends its way changing from coastal views to vegetation cloaked areas along the way. The vegetation types and terrain are varied and the forest becomes taller and thicker as you approach the Torbay Hut and lookout. Karri trees can be found in this area.  The hut and lookout are a great place to take a short breather, and there is a toilet at this site.

From the hut you continue to descend slowly through forested areas towards Cosy Corner. Crossing the Hartmans Beach road marks the final leg with Cosy Corner only about 30 minutes away.    From here the Bibbulmun Track intersects a number of other walk trails on the Cosy Corner hillside before emerging at the top of the steps, the final descent to Cosy Corner carpark.

This is classed as an easy walk but  good walking shoes are a must and you must be fit enough to walk for 3 hours.  Hats, water bottles and appropriate clothing are a must.

After the walk we will be heading to the Cosy Corner Cafe and will provide light refreshments for participants , please feel welcome to join us there.
